Steven completed his optometry degree at Queensland University of Technology in 1999. In 2000 he and his wife travelled to Tasmania to take up a position with OPSM working between their clinics in Burnie and Devonport. In 2004 they returned to Queensland for 18 months working in a small independent practice in Gympie. In 2005 Steven purchased the practice known as Michael Churcher Optometrist in Stewart Street Devonport. The practice then became Davis Churcher Optometrists and later Davis Churcher Eyecare.

Steven completed a postgraduate degree in Ocular Therapeutics at QUT in 2012 to enhance the management of eye diseases.
